THE DISCURSIVE CONSTRUCTION OF BASQUE NATIONAL IDENTITY IN ARGUMENTATIVE DISCOURSE

Maria del Puy Ciriza

Abstract

This paper parses the linguistic devices involved in the construction of Basque national identity by two different types of Basque ‘nationalized individuals’: Basques whose parents are immigrants (B.I) and Basques whose parents are autochthonous (B.A). This study presents data from 12 in-depth interviews carried during the Summer of 2005. These surveys aimed at eliciting he subjects’ position towards their beliefs and attitudes about Basque national identity. The aim of this paper is to draw the imaginary linguistic line that differentiates both members of the nationalized in-group.
