The option for portraying the poor becomes an emblem of many of the narratives that shaped the theme of choice of the social novel of the 1930’s. Especially those written by Northeastern intellectuals such as writer Amando Fontes, or even, Jorge Amado. The facets of the readings about these actors permeate what I call the rhetoric of poverty as a strategy for the romantic critique of the conditions faced by the proletariat and prostitutes generally excluded from the Brazilian society of the early decades of the last century. By peering its aesthetic and rhetoric to define the sort of analysis for these characters I intend to understand the peculiarities of these power games to craft a sensitive world of these actors.
